CLEVELAND - May is Bike Safety Awareness Month.

As children everywhere get ready to dust off their two-wheeler for the season, it’s important to make sure their heads are protected.

According to Michael Macknin, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic Children’s, riding a bike is great exercise for children, but accidents can happen.

“Head injuries are by far and away the most dangerous injuries with bike crashes and bike helmets prevent injuries,” said Dr. Macknin.

Dr. Macknin said the best way to get a child to wear a helmet is to involve them in the selection process, because a child will usually only wear a helmet that they like.

He said it’s important to not be fooled by fancy ‘sharp’ edges and things that stick out from the helmet –they may look cool - but can actually make a helmet less safe.

“What you’d like to do is get a helmet that’s as round as possible, as smooth as possible, because if you have edges sticking out, those can get caught if you’re in a crash and it can stop your head from rolling smoothly and can actually cause significant injury,” said Dr. Macknin.

It’s also a good idea to get a light color that would be visible in any weather.

Dr. Macknin said it’s not only essential to have a helmet that fits properly, but also that the rider knows how to put in on the correct way.

“A lot of kids don’t like to tie the clasp, and that’s a bad idea,” said Dr. Macknin. “Because sometimes even if you can get a good fit with some of the adjustable head pieces on these – you can tighten the head fit – that really isn’t enough to hold the helmet on in case of a crash.”

Dr. Macknin said it’s important to know that bike helmets are only good for one crash. They contain a Styrofoam lining that protects the head, but once it’s been in a crash, that Styrofoam gets compacted and is no longer safe to use again.

And helmets aren’t just for bikes. Dr. Macknin advises parents to make sure their child is wearing a helmet any time they’re engaged in an activity that gets them moving faster than a walk. This includes rollerblading, skate boarding, riding on a scooter or a hoverboard.
